Assessment for the Himalayan Mountain Region for Enviromental
Managment and Sustainable Development

The
Himalayan mountain region is among the world's most diverse
and fragile ecosystems. Nearly forty participants from Nepal,
India and Pakistan, as well as representatives from the
Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) and
the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) of IGBP, attended
the APN funded Scoping Workshop on 2-5 October 2001 in Kathmandu,
Nepal, to discuss key issues of the Himalayan enviroment
related to global change and to prepare a research proposal
for submission to the APN. Participants presented twenty
papers on various issues of global change in Himalayan Mountain
region, including global change impacts on agriculture and
vegetation, glaciers, water quality of rivers, and transportation
of sediments. A proceeding volume, "Global Change and
Himalayan Mountains", is now available.
